Faircross
Residential Property
Earlier this year we designed, made, and installed this beautiful curved balustrade and handrail to two staircases in St Albans. We were instructed by a private client, who found and loved our work on Instagram.
The main staircase was curved concrete, clad in stone, and connected by two curved landings. The second staircase from the first to the second floor was a closed-string softwood staircase. It was crucial to the client that although these are very different stair designs, our balustrade and handrail should remain consistent, as they can both be accessed from the first-floor landing.
The spindle design was art deco spindles, all custom made from 16mm square bar and powder coated. The handrails were made from Ash and stained off-black to match the doors in this exquisite home. Our design team had to ensure the curved balustrade complied with building regulations, yet looked elegant. The continuous wooden handrail on the second staircase was particularly challenging, avoiding the usual ‘swan neck’ transitions.
