A Slimline Bespoke Balustrade in Timber and Metal

This bespoke staircase design pairs an oak handrail with slimline black metal spindles, a combination that keeps the sightline through the stairwell open while giving the staircase a clear frame. The spindles were finished in a matte powder coating, and the handrail in a slightly tinted lacquer, so the black metal and the oak sit against each other without either dominating.

Every hole in the underside of the handrail had to match the spindle positions on the staircase exactly, with no room for error once the components arrived on site. Our bespoke balustrade work is designed and machined around that tolerance rather than adjusted to fit afterwards, and the balustrade components are produced to the same specification as the handrail they fix into.

Pre-Jointed Continuous Oak Handrail Across Four Floors

The oak handrails were pre-jointed in our workshop and designed to run continuously throughout the property, taking in swan necks, wreaths, twists and turns as the staircase changes direction. Each section was shaped and finished using modern manufacturing methods so the geometry was fixed before anything reached the building.

Running a continuous handrail through four floors of a property like this means the joints have to disappear. Where a handrail is assembled from straight sections on site, you see every junction. Here the line carries through, which is what makes the staircase read as a centrepiece rather than as circulation.

Frequently asked questions

The contrast. Slimline black metal spindles in a matte powder-coated finish set against a European Oak handrail in a lightly tinted lacquer, so the balustrade frames the staircase without closing off the stairwell.

Yes. The Chelsea handrails run continuously through four floors, pre-jointed in our workshop and incorporating swan necks, wreaths, twists and turns. Continuous handrails are manufactured as a single flowing component rather than assembled from straight lengths on site.

A swan neck is the curved section that lifts a handrail from the rake of the stairs up to the level of a landing newel or a horizontal run. It’s one of the shapes that has to be machined into a continuous handrail rather than cut and joined.

They do. Each hole in the underside of the handrail is machined to match the spindle position on the staircase, so the components are produced to the same drawing rather than adjusted on site.
