What Is a Balustrade?

A balustrade is the complete protective and decorative system positioned alongside a staircase, balcony, landing or other change in level. Depending on the design, it can incorporate a handrail, spindles or balusters, newel posts and a range of other structural or decorative components.

The terms balustrade, bannister and handrail are often used interchangeably, but they describe different parts of the same system. A handrail is the rail designed to provide support as someone moves up or down a stair. A balustrade is the broader term for the full arrangement of components surrounding the staircase, of which the handrail is one part.

Because a balustrade sits at the intersection of safety and design, it needs to be considered from both directions at once. A well-designed system should complement the surrounding architecture while providing the level of support and guarding appropriate to how the space is used.

In England, staircase and guarding design also needs to take account of the current Building Regulations, principally Approved Document K: Protection from Falling, Collision and Impact. We look at what this means in practice further down this page, but it’s a factor worth raising with your designer or manufacturer at the earliest stage of a project, rather than treating it as an afterthought once a design has already been chosen.

Bespoke Balustrades Made to Measure

A staircase might be straight, curved, helical or entirely one-of-a-kind, and existing drawings aren’t always available, or accurate enough, for a complex installation to be manufactured directly. Where this is the case, our team can carry out a detailed 3D survey to capture the existing geometry before building a digital model ready for manufacture.

This is particularly valuable when working with existing staircases, irregular structures or unusual architectural forms. Rather than adapting a standard product to fit the space as best it can, we design the balustrade and handrail around the staircase itself, so the finished system reads as though it was always meant to be there.

The result is a custom balustrade developed specifically for its staircase, rather than selected from a standard range and adjusted to fit.

Timber Balustrades with Traditional Craftsmanship

Timber remains one of the most versatile materials for balustrade design, offering warmth, texture and a natural connection to the other finishes within a property.

Our timber balustrades are manufactured in a range of premium hardwoods and can be tailored to suit both traditional and contemporary interiors. Depending on the brief, timber can be left to showcase its natural grain, stained to achieve a particular tone, painted, or polished to a fine finish.

Modern manufacturing precision and traditional woodworking sit side by side throughout our process. CNC machining allows us to produce complex shapes to consistent, exacting dimensions, while our joiners refine, sand and hand-finish every component afterwards to achieve the appearance the design calls for. On a feature staircase in particular, it’s this finishing stage, not the machining alone, that determines how the surface actually looks and feels once the balustrade is installed.

Timber also works well in combination with other materials. A warm timber handrail sitting above contemporary steel spindles, for example, creates a deliberate contrast between natural and engineered materials, and is one of the more popular approaches we see on both period and new-build projects.

Custom Balustrades for Curved, Helical and Complex Staircases

Not every staircase follows a standard layout. Curves, changing radii, unusual angles and multi-level installations all introduce additional challenges when a balustrade needs to be designed around them.

Our digital surveying and modelling process is built to handle these complexities from the outset. Where drawings aren’t available, or don’t reflect what’s actually on site, we use 3D scanning to capture the existing staircase and produce an accurate digital representation. That model then forms the basis for developing the balustrade and handrail design before anything is manufactured.

This capability extends across spiral, helical, curved and straight staircase forms, giving architects, designers, contractors and homeowners more freedom when developing a staircase concept than a standard system would allow. Because our surveying process can capture staircase geometry to a high level of accuracy, complex timber handrails and balustrade components can be manufactured to fit their intended installation first time, rather than requiring adjustment on site.

One Coordinated System, Not a Collection of Parts

A successful balustrade isn’t simply a set of individual components fixed together after the fact. Each element needs to work with the others in terms of proportion, fixing, finish and overall design intent.

Depending on the project, we manufacture handrails, spindles or balusters, newel posts, newel caps, brackets and specialist machined parts, produced in timber, steel, brass and other materials suited to the design. Because these components are designed and manufactured as part of one coordinated package, details such as joints, fixing points and transitions are worked through at the design stage rather than resolved on site as problems arise.

On particularly complex projects, components can be pre-jointed, assembled and finished within our workshop ahead of delivery. Doing as much of this work off site as possible reduces the amount of specialist work required during installation and gives our team far greater control over the finished result before it ever reaches the property.

Advanced CNC Manufacturing and Digital Surveying

Modern manufacturing technology is central to how we produce bespoke balustrades, but it works alongside traditional craftsmanship rather than replacing it. Our in-house capabilities include 3D surveying, CAD/CAM design and 5-axis CNC machining. Digital models allow our design team to visualise a proposed balustrade, check complex geometry before manufacture and produce components accurately ahead of delivery to site, catching potential fit issues on screen rather than during installation.

Five-axis machining is particularly well suited to bespoke timber work, since it can produce complex three-dimensional forms to a high level of precision. This opens up options for curved handrails, specialist balustrade components and designs that would be considerably more difficult, and less consistent, to produce using conventional joinery methods alone.

Machining, though, is only the first half of the process. Once a component comes off the CNC machine, our craftsmen inspect it, refine any detailing that needs a hand-worked finish and hand-finish the surface before it leaves the workshop. It’s this combination – digital accuracy at the manufacturing stage and skilled finishing afterwards – that’s central to what makes our custom balustrades genuinely bespoke rather than simply machine-made.

Quality Materials and Finishes

Material selection plays a significant role in both the appearance and the long-term durability of a balustrade. For timber components, we select hardwoods based on their suitability for the intended application as well as the finish the design calls for. Depending on the project, timber can be stained, painted, polished or otherwise finished to complement the surrounding flooring, furniture and architectural detailing.

Metal components can be customised in a similar way. Steel, brass and other finishes can be worked into a bespoke balustrade to create anything from understated contemporary detailing to a more decorative, traditional architectural feature.

How do you measure a staircase for a bespoke balustrade?

Where required, we use detailed digital surveys and 3D scanning to capture the exact geometry of a staircase. That data is then used by our design team to build accurate digital models and manufacture components suited to the existing space, rather than relying on drawings that may no longer reflect what’s actually there.

Do bespoke balustrades need to comply with Building Regulations?

Balustrades and guarding form part of the safety design of a staircase, so the current Building Regulations and standards for the specific building and its intended use need to be taken into account. In England, this guidance sits within Approved Document K: Protection from Falling, Collision and Impact, which remains the current government reference document for staircase and guarding design. Broadly, it sets minimum balustrade heights (typically around 900mm on domestic stairs and 1,100mm on landings and balconies, with different figures applying in some commercial and public settings), together with a rule that no gap within the balustrade should allow a 100mm sphere to pass through – a measure specifically intended to prevent young children from becoming trapped between spindles or infill panels.

Exact requirements vary depending on the type of building, its use and, in some cases, whether it’s listed or within a conservation area, so the specifics should always be confirmed for the individual project rather than assumed from a general guide. Where a project involves a listed building or sensitive historic fabric, it’s also worth discussing the design with Building Control and, where relevant, the local planning authority before manufacturing begins.
