Cove House: Oak Handrails & Bespoke Balustrade Design

Residential Property

Contemporary Balustrade Design Without a Core Rail

A key feature of the Cove House balustrade design is the way the steel spindles are integrated directly into the oak handrails. Each of the 300 black steel spindles was individually fixed into the underside of the continuous oak handrails. This bespoke fixing method eliminates the need for a traditional visible core rail and meant that no welding was required on site. The result is a clean, uninterrupted appearance, allowing the curved and continuous form of the oak handrails to remain the focus of the staircase.

This approach also demonstrates the benefits of designing the individual components as one complete system. By considering the fixing method during the manufacturing stage, the balustrade could be pre-assembled in our workshop before being installed on site.

Precision Manufacturing and Pre-Assembly

The balustrade and handrails were built and pre-assembled at our factory before installation. This approach allowed the individual components to be checked for accuracy and prepared ahead of delivery, reducing the amount of specialist work required on site.

The continuous oak handrails were precision manufactured using 5-axis CNC machining, while the steel spindles were individually prepared and fixed into the underside of the timber. Pre-assembly is particularly useful for complex bespoke staircase projects, where careful coordination between the handrail, balustrade and staircase is essential to achieving a seamless finished result. The installation team was therefore able to work efficiently on site while maintaining the high-quality finish expected of a bespoke residential staircase.

Combining Oak and Black Steel

The material combination was central to the overall design. The warmth and natural character of the oak handrails contrast with the clean, contemporary appearance of the black steel spindles, creating a staircase that feels modern without losing the character of natural timber.

The existing timber staircase, manufactured by Multiturn, provided the ideal foundation for this approach. By coordinating the oak handrails and steel balustrade with the staircase itself, Handrail Creations created a cohesive design that runs consistently across all four floors.

A Bespoke Staircase Designed Around the Property

The Cove House project highlights the value of a bespoke approach when designing staircase and balustrade systems for high-end residential properties. Rather than using standard components, the handrails and balustrade were manufactured specifically for the staircase. From the continuous oak handrails and individually fixed spindles to the concealed fixing approach, each detail was considered to create the desired architectural appearance.

The completed installation was well received by the client, who commented: “We are super happy with the handrails – they have come out really nice and just as we hoped.”
