Cornerwood
Residential Property
At ‘Cornerwood,’ a remarkable residential property near St Albans, we took on a project involving the manufacturing and installation of three flights of bespoke balustrade and continuous wooden handrails for the feature staircase. This grand entrance hall was designed to impress, and our craftsmanship added the perfect finishing touch.
Location:
St Albans, United Kingdom
Project Description:
The project’s main attraction was the three flights of stairs and the expansive open atrium, making the entrance hall the main architectural feature in the home. Our design process began with a 3D survey of the staircase in its existing state since no drawings were available for the concrete.
Materials Used:
For the timber handrails, we used Sapele, known for its stability and dark colour. The balustrade featured 16mm diameter steel spindles, powder-coated for a hardwearing finish that will last years in this busy family home.
Design Concept:
Given the staircase’s prominence as a focal point in the home, we aimed for a design that seamlessly blended traditional aesthetics with suitability for the vast space. The result was a design that exuded elegance without becoming overly intricate. The continuous wooden handrail connected the basement to the second floor, almost 50 metres in total.
Manufacturing and Installation:
We engineered the handrails with pre-machined holes on the underside to seamlessly align with corresponding holes in the concrete stairs, creating a clean finish with no welding or ugly core rail. Our dedicated installation team completed in just over a week. Thanks to our unique design and fixing method, there was no need for newel posts to ensure structural stability.
