How high should you install a handrail?

When it comes to designing and installing a staircase, the handrail might seem like a simple finishing touch. In reality, it’s a vital safety feature – and getting the height right is more important than many realise.

At Handrail Creations, we specialise in creating beautifully crafted wooden handrails, and we’re here to help you ensure that every detail, including the installation height, meets both regulations and aesthetic expectations.

What is the standard handrail height?

In the UK, handrail heights are guided by building regulations set out in Approved Document K. This states that the top of a handrail should be positioned between 900mm and 1000mm from the pitch line of the stairs, or from the floor level on landings.

Additionally, Part K also recommends the inclusion of a secondary, lower handrail at 600mm in some public buildings to provide extra support for children.

This range applies to both domestic and commercial properties, though additional considerations may apply in public buildings or for compliance with the Equality Act.

Why does handrail height matter?

Handrails are not only a design feature; they’re also essential for safety. The correct height ensures that people of all ages and abilities can safely grip the rail for balance and support.

Installing a handrail too low can make it awkward to use and ineffective in preventing falls. Too high, and it becomes inaccessible, especially for children or individuals with limited mobility.

Getting the height right is about more than ticking boxes – it’s about creating a space that feels comfortable and secure for everyone who uses it.

Considering the style and structure

At Handrail Creations, we understand that style matters just as much as safety. Whether you’re opting for a sleek contemporary look or a classic timber design, the position of the handrail plays a key role in the visual flow of your staircase.

Our team works closely with clients to ensure that each handrail is custom-made and fitted not just within regulation height, but with a seamless integration into the architecture of the space. Whether mounted directly to the wall or incorporated into a balustrade, we take both form and function into account.

Tips for a smooth installation

Measure carefully: Always measure from the pitch line of the stair or the finished floor level, not from the tread.

Account for users: Think about who will be using the staircase most often. In some homes, installing a second lower handrail can be beneficial for children or elderly residents.

Work with professionals: Precision matters. An expertly crafted handrail can elevate a staircase – both in appearance and practicality.
